Hi, I have a house full of oak flooring that was refinished about 12 years ago with Glitza Swedish finish. There are some wear spots now and I'm considering screening and recoating, but I don't want to use Glitza because it's so toxic and I can't readily obtain it. Can I use a more common oil or water based urethane over the Glitza, or would it be necessary to sand all the old finish off?

Thanks,
Greg

You should be able to apply a quality waterbased finish over the Glitza if prepped properly. Both Basic and Bona have prep systems for re-coating factory finished floors. While I like Basic's non buff system, I prefer Bona Traffic to Basic's Street Shoe so I use Bona's Prep Spray and the 3M SPP maroon pad. Make sure you get the SPP pad and not the "in between coats" maroon pad. If thoroughly cleaned and de-glossed (abraded), Traffic will adhere nicely. But you may wish to perform a test in a closet, just to be absolutely sure.
