The contractor just put down a 3/4" T&G plywood underlayment over my old, unusable strip flooring. However, he did not measure and cut the plywood accurately and there are big gaps between the edges and wall, anywhere from 1/2"-2". A floating cork laminate is going down, but before I'd like to fill the gaps to prevent sound transmission (this is in a condo) and insulate the rooms. He filled one gap with liquid nail but it stinks to high heaven. Instead can I use lots of caulking and backer rod? How about a cementious patching compound?

With gaps that big, you may be able to cut strips of plywood to fit. If the are not straight tapers you may have to scribe lines and cut them with a jigsaw. (I'm a homeowner and novice in flooring, but as a woodworker that would seem like a plausible solution and avoid all the chemical/goop mess).

What a slob!

I can just imagine his finish work, if he didn't care about the subfloor. It wouldn't matter after the finished floor were installed over it, had it not been a upper floor condo, where they usually have city ordances about noise transfer to other residents.

I would nit pick his finish work.

it is odd to me too put down 3/4 ply over 3/4 hardwood thats prob over 3/4 subfloor. Why not just float over exsistingg hardwood? or 3/8" ply . seems like a lot of extra work?
