At Lowes I see they make a material for floor leveling. It's a powder that you mix with water. My question is I have a dip in my floor that is about 10 inches in diameter and a little over a 1/4 deep ( at a seem). I don't want to use shingles and would prefer a leveling compound. Will I be able to staple through this concrete like material? Could I use automotive bondo instead of this material if I felt like it?

When I was repairing the subfloor that I damaged while removing glued down parquet, I used Bondo for blending the damaged part that I couldn't replace with the patch in the center of the room that I did replace. It wasn't Bondo from Pep Boys, but Bondo from Home Depot. It came in agallon can and was called something like "Bondo - Home".

As best I could tell, it was the same stuff. Mixed the same, smelled the same, sanded the same, etc. The only difference I could tell was that the hardener was blue, rather than red, which made the Bondo blue-gray instead of pink-gray.

As a pro, I will not nail into leveling compounds. IMO, those products will fail over time, to properly hold the fastener. I believe many will crack immediately upon nailing, causing the levelor to crumble and/or break down. There is perhaps a product that could be troweled into depressions that would hold fasteners as well as wood does and not crumble, crack and have a bond failure. Perry? Jerry?
