Okay, anyone against face nailing an entire floor of White Pine, 3/4" by 5 1/8"? It seems like a sound option, lay the floor, nailgun where appropriate, putty, and finish with stain. Any problems you all forsee?

And what if the floor needs leveling (it does) will the nails penetrate the leveling solution?

Thanks,

Peter

Note: I do not do this for a living.

What would you be nailing this to (subfloor)?

When you typed 'leveling solution', my first thought was concrete. I do not believe that any type of 'leveling compound/mixture' should be used on a plywood or OSB subfloor.

Putty will not take stain the same as the wood. There will be a noticeable color difference at the nail spots.

My brother installed, sanded and finished this floor about 15 years ago and faced nailed these planks as you can see in the photo. These planks are 2" thick and some are full length across the rooms and they are fastened to screeds.

We sanded and finished again after this floor had 3' of saltwater during Katrina. The owner and many of the historical societies around here do not want us to fill the nail holes.

I like to fill these nail holes if they will let us. And yes, they still show after filling but they want them to show.

The white lines in the gaps between the planks are not there, just glare from the lighting.
