I'm going to attempt to finish the job started by a (supposed) contractor laying hardwood in my home...

I have a sunken living room that is 13-feet wide and have a few questions about the stair (step-down) into the room:

1) I have to join/splice several pieces of stair nose together to accommodate the extra length of the step-down; am I supposed to angle cut these to join them together? Or just line them up as is, glue them down, and face-nail?

2) What about the riser...do I need to angle cut the hardwood that I use as a riser?

Thanks!

splices should be mitred..glued underneath and finish nailed at the mitres

don't know what you mean about the riser.

dependent upon species, you could get a long solid length and finish it to match..this is what we do when possible.

Thanks James.

With regards to the riser, I was wondering how to install it? The boards I planned on using are 4.75-inches, but the rise is only about 4-inches...so I planned on ripping them down to 4-inches. ...but they are not 13-feet long (the length of the entire step-down), so how do I join multiple pieces together? Do I just use the tongue/groove, glue, and face nail?

This is the hardwood we're installing, if that helps with any advice: http://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/c/Golden-Teak-Acacia-Handscraped-Virginia-Mill-Works-VMGT5/10006652?Wt.cs_id=CSE_google&CAWELAID=1925957295&gcsct=0ChMIyKXj4MiWugIVw2_mCh3jYwAAEAA

I understand now.

I would follow same procedure.

the mitre through the thickness looks better and helps for expansion.
the seam wont appear open if moves.
