Hi,

I have installed a solid maple hardwood floor and I will have it professionally sanded and finished.
The baseboard is not installed.
When my house was built, they ran the drywall all the way to the floor so I had to cut off a couple of inches.

I know from experience that if the floor is finished with the exposed drywall edge it will rain drywall dust onto the finish.
So my question is, what is the best way to cover this edge?
I was thinking of using some fairly heavy plastic sheeting, perhaps nailing it to the floor or sole plate and taping it to the wall with duct tape. I don't see why it could not be left there and covered with base molding.

Also, as far as selecting a floor sander/finisher professional what's the best way to insure a quality job (I'm quality driven, not price driven)?
In every residential home I have been in I can see the start/stop marks from sander. This tells me that there are not many skilled sanders out there.

Thanks for any tips,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Sure, you could cover the edge with tape. No harm there. Of course, the tape should not touch the flooring or prohibit the sanding and finishing in any way. It sounds as if you understand that.

As far as finding a quality sander/finisher, locate 3 to 5 of the best guys in your area who are experienced. Ask each to bid on the work and feel free to voice your concerns re: quality workmanship. Then simply choose the one you believe will do the best job for you.
