Hi all,

Well I'm back with another question and it regards what to do about slight streaking in a oil based polyurethane finish (satin sheen). Just finished up what I hoped would be my last coat of finish and the results are OK but not great.

For some background info...the floor had a couple coats of gloss and then a disasterous attempt to roll the final coat of satin (alligatored like crazy). After screening I have applied two coats of satin. I experimented with different application methods in a closet (3/8 nap white dove roller, 3/16 nap varnish roller and finally a painters pad). No matter what I tried both rollers led to alligatoring and extreme bubbles in finish so I settled on the painter's pad. The pad works alright but no matter how hard I try (and believe me I've tried) I'm still getting some streaking.

So for my question. Is there anything I can do at this point (short of rescreening and applying another coat with no guarantee of success) to even out the finish??

Would buffing (either by hand or machine) help? If it would what should I use to do it.....i.e. a white scotch brite , or maroon.

Thanks for any help!

Dan

Floorguy,

I had considered the temperature of the room might be part of the problem, though there isn't a thermostat in the room it doesn't feel overly cold. Let me put it this way.... when I'm hand sanding the floor for the for the thousandths time  I usually end up sweating and that is in shorts and t-shirt. I quess it is possible the floor temp is actually colder than the air temp.

Having said that (and I'll keep it in mind if I do decide to recoat) is there anything short of recoating that can lessen the streaking? Will buffing help or not.

Dan

NOFMA:
Apply finish in parallel strips across the room. Always
maintain a “wet” edge. Don’t retouch missed areas
(holidays) if finish has begun to skim over. The next
coat will fill these areas. Allow to dry overnight.
