did the class and got my certificate.how necessary is it to get "firmed"?.this is an additional 300.00 i think.we are legally allowed to remove 6 sq. ft. without red tape.how often are flooring contractors running into lead paint problems?does anyone have the name of a legal representative who can clarify this issue?

I can only speak for myself....Just over 35 years in the business, havent run into it yet. Watch next week I'll have to address it ! lol

On second thought, I do remember years back running into a slab that was coated with led base paint. I dont remember how we ended up handling it, but I do know we didnt scarify or remove it.

I do remember , before asbestos was brought out of the closet, sanding corridors of asbestos tile in a hospital, prepping for sheet goods  Or the tons of asbestos backing we removed back then

I know I just ran into a set of stairs with lead paint, gave them an estimate and then realized it was probably lead paint so I backed out. I cant seem to get many straight answers either hopefully we get some info here.

Here is a link to another thread at FI.com. Tim the poster of the thread has really done his homework on the subject. Read it and make up your own mind. Or do like Tim did, call them.

it is mandatory in northwest arkansas to have your epa/lead base paint certificate ,it might be made mandatory to have your lead base paint/epa certificate (220.00 in arkansas)i was in new orleans ,and was surprised to see a full page color ad in tourist magazine about this lead base paint problem.so it probably will snowball within the next year.however with a 6 sq. ft. tolerence,we should be ok.once you are certified than you can test the pre 1978 house for lead paint(you must be certified for this)IF YOU ARE NOT THAN LEAVE! once you diagnose the job you can : (a) bid on the job if no lead paint is present (b)bid on the job if less than 6 sq. ft. of lead paint is disturbed (c)bid on the job w/more than tolerence amount, but you must be firmed w/the epa to do renovations.at that point monetary compensation is up to you and the customer.but if you do not follow regulations(and the book is an 1" thick)look out! fines are over $35,000.

I guess I'm having a senior moment on this one :? Or good possibility I've just lived in the wrong area of the country. Potent, I was under the impression that your questioning " how often do flooring contractors run into lead paint problems,( another words, strictly related to the practice of the floorcoverings, not total renovations ). I'll admit I'm far from well versed on this subject, and I can tell your very well versed at this point. What am I missing...Common sense tells me the only time a flooring contractor would run into lead base paint is existing trim work, or on rare occasion, a floor is painted. On both instances there's easy alternatives, ( unless it's a sand job ).
