It sounds like you have asphalt floor tiles glued down with a petroleum based adhesive over a concrete slab. Do not sand or remove the tiles.

If moisture is not a problem I would look to a floating (glueless) engineered wood floor that lays over the top of your existing tile floor. Be sure the tiles are well secured. Check the manufacturer's installation recommendations to be sure you are not voiding the warranty.

I would agree wtih John that we need to know if you have a moisture issue. The other important question is where you are located? We are in Florida on the coast so with the high humidity I would definitly say that you need an engineered product here.

Depending on thickness that you can allow (doors, appliances, baseboards) for will also factor into your decision. You can put nail down plywood (over felt & visqueen) and then glue an engineered wood to that in order to protect you on your adhesive warranty.
