Hello,

I would like to install a new hardwood floor over an existing "heartwood pine" strip subfloor. My first choice is 3/4" solid planks simply for the fact that they can be refinished many times. However, with the fairly new, hard, 20-yr finishes now being factory applied, I shouldn't have to refinish the floor for as long as I own the house (maybe another 15 years, max). I barely have the clearance to install 3/4", but any more than that would cause me a lot of extra work and expense (insulated steel front door would need to be raised, first step on staircase leading to the second floor would become quite low if I raise the floor too much, etc.). My question is...is there an advantage to installing either type floor? This is to be installed on a first floor above a dry basement.

Thanks,
Garry
