I have a dining room that looks very similar to a sample board of engineered 3.25" wide Lauzon Tigerwood, being multicolored from rosey blonde to deep red. It's shiny and beautiful, but gets virtually no traffic. It is very thin flooring so it does not rise above the tile floor. I plan to add hardwood flooring to the living room that is compatible with the dining room, but the seller is out of business, so I need to find another flooring product.
Questions:
1...The off-to-the-side dining room is separated from the living room by a 38" tile passageway. Would 5” wide boards in the living room look out of place?
2...I would like to use the the hardest wood possible that is color and design compatible to the dining room floor. Patagonian Rosewood or Patagonian Cherry seem to fit the bill. Unfortunately, I cannot find a thinner engineered board in those varieties, all of them appear to be 3/4” solids, which despite transitions, would cause people to trip over them, as the highest traffic area is the living room area between the kitchen and my sliders leading into the lanai/patio (the kitchen and hallway tile is very thin and glued to the slab). Does anyone know of a suitable product that is not so high?
I thank you in advance for your comments.

Do me a favor stop plugging Hoskings. They are competition for all of us.

I did not know that, but I do recall you're at Floors & Decors or something like that in Boston? Guess you did a piece for TOH too?

Hello Stephen,
I haven't made the decision yet...but the sample I saw was a finished (stained and finished) sample. Because it is not as hard as I would like I am going to compare a sample of Brazilian Cherry also from Lauzon to see if there is a good enough match with the existing dining room floor which appears to be Tigerwood.
I read Ken's excellent article on maintaining floors, so I know that eventually damage will occur (as in his analogy to door dings on a new car), but I am convinced that the harder the floor, the less depression damage (as opposed to scratching) will occur.
So essentially what I think I need is a relatively low profile (the height of the tile which will join the wood floor is about a 1/4") board rather than a solid board of 3/4" high, hence my emphasis on engineered boards.
Thanks for your interest.
John

Sorry Stephen, I misunderstood your question. Yes I presently have what appears to be Tigerwood in my dining room, separated by a 3' tile passageway. I want to match it as close as possible, but in a harder wood.
Regards/John
