Does it matter if the upstairs and downstairs flooring run in the same direction or can it change?

Both my upstairs and downstairs flooring is parallel to the front door threshold. I'm getting ready to rip up the little bit of oak flooring we have in our front entrance and hallway to replace it with Brazilian cherry and want to make sure it's "aesthetically correct."

Thanks in advance.

That's a tough call without seeing the home. I will say that most the time I prefer " walking in with the planks" ,from the front door, that's usually, but not always the case, depends on the rest of the layout. That sound like the direction your changing to , on the 1st floor. Usually a change on the 2nd floor is o.k. aesthetically, but not always, ie layout, visually, if beams or planks on ceiling, etc. I have a few designers that are really into fungshway ( spelling? ) , they would tell you ya or na in a hearbeat.

The direction of floor joist dictates the direction of the flooring, unless you have at least 1" of plywood subflooring.

Over concrete, you can go which ever way you wish.
