Kitchen needs to be redone. The house has hardwood flooring in all of the original rooms. I thought there might be hardwood under the vomit inducing linoleum. It appears there is some sort of slats, but they don't look like it was every finished. I don't really know if its sub-flooring or not, it runs flush with the hardwood in an adjacent room.

Here are some pictures:

You can see where the finished flooring meets the... other stuff...

Any advice would be appreciated. If its not worth having it restored/finished I'll probably have to go with Tile.

Looks like yellow pine that was used as a sub floor. Very common to see that sort of thing here in Connecticut.I'm curious as to why it is the same height as your red oak though .If your red oak is on 3/4 plywood and is itself 3/4 thick then what is yoru yellow pine on top of ?
The value of sanding and finishing it is in your eyes really. It's going to be beat up but if you don't mind a rustic look , it'll be okay. The only other thing that comes to mind is durability.Yellow pine is soft and doesn't hold up well to dogs and women's shoes.

In my experience that black stuff will be a pain to sand off. But it usually seems like it potects the floor. I personally like pine and think it could probably come out looking pretty good. Also, it is much cheaper than buying new wood.

Yeah. I agree that the black paint serves as a protection to the floor. It is interior floor paint that is a quick drying floor coating, manufactured from high quality pigments and a durable acrylic resin which is ideal for use on interior concrete, wood, linoleum and vinyl floor coatings.
