I have 3/4 oak flooring. Does this have to installed perpendicular to the floor joist? Visually would like to run it length wise in the room but the joist run that direction.

Overlay the subfloor with ½ plywood, or add blocking between the joist, every 16-24"
Then you can lay it any direction you wish.

Go across the joist, if you choose not to reinforce the substrate.
