Has anyone installed a floor with two different widths. I want to alternate rows with 3" and 5". Would like someones opinion on how this might look. I have seen some hardwoods sold this way, but have not seen pictures of this type of install.

I did a 3.25" & 2.25" red oak to match an existing floor. The exisitng floor was prefinished and I did an unfinished with original Waterlox.

The existing floor is very easy to see the different sizes. Golden oak color with beveled edges.

The new floor is hardly noticeable that there is 2 different sizes with the lighter wood color and no beveled edges to highlight the different widths. Nobody had noticed until it was pointed out that there were 2 different sizes.

Could show pictures with help.

is this for knock down sand and finish, pre finished floating or what?
if it gets sanded and finished on site it will not be very obvious to the untrained eye. especially if its the same species. if you are nailing it make sure to glue your tonges on the five inch boards

It's all on the look you are after. I have done a 3"-4"-5" prefinished hickory with beveled edges and it look nice. It was definately easy to see and the client loved it.

Wish I had my pics with me. A client went with 2.25 and either 4 or 5 inch. When all said it done (sanded and finished) alot of it blended in. I was thinking maybe 2.25 red oak and 5 inch white. Or if it had the bevels like someone mentioned that might help bring out the difference.

I like the common grades when doing alternating widths the variation in color ect helps to show the diffrent plank widths as well.
