I am in the process of replacing the carpert in my bedrooms with engineers hardwood. This will be a floating floor. The carpet in the hallway will be replaced with new carpert after I finish installing the flooring in the bedrooms.

I am using baby threshold to transition between the flooring and the carpet.

I have not done an undercut at the door jamb & door stop. I have dry fitted the baby threshold. I am including 2 pictures of the transition at the door(door opened and door closed). The carpet in the picture will be replaced with new carpet once I finsih installing the flooring in all the rooms.

Should the threshold be repostioned before I install it to the sub floor? Should it be moved in a little to better align with the bottom of the door when it is closed or should it stay as is?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Yea, looks like it needs to be moved back about an inch or so....you want the threshold to fall underneath the door, so when it is closed, you see only carpet in the hall, and only wood in the room.

P.S. You have NOT undercut the door casing? Make sure you do, so that the flooring slides underneath and has room for expansion...it's critical for that floating installation. Also be sure that you have positioned the threshold so that there is expansion space underneath the lip of it as well.

thanks for info. I appreciate it. I have another question. In dry fittig the threshold, there is a gap of about 3/16 inch between the bottom portion of the threshold that would sit on the subfloor and the subloor. I think I should take care of this gap before permanently installing the threshold. What would be the best way to deal with the gap?

Cut a 3/16th inch thick strip, the same width as the stem of the trim piece, and glue it to the bottom of the transition before installing.
And yes, the trim should be moved back to the point where, if the door is closed, all you see on one side is the hardwood, and carpet on the other side.
If you DONT cut the door frame, you will have one ugly filling job to do around the base and it will spoil the whole look of the installation.
