Hey guys, i have been going crazy trying to figure out what to do with our hardwood floors. We had a hardwood floor company sand/stain and refinish about 1800 sqft of floor. Some original and some we matched. The first problem was they were super sloppy and got stain all over the bottom of our brand new kitcken cabinets. Then we also saw a sander mark on the refigeratogor panel. Needless to say i got a quote from the cabinet place to replace the panel and kickplates. I was going to just take the rice of the quote off what i owed the floor guys so i let them finish the rest. After the stain and 3 coats of polly i go to inspect the work and it is a disaster. Gouge marks from the sander being tilted. The underneath of the stair nose has no stain. There are spots that were missed when sandig and not smooth. There are puddles of uneven stain throughput with polly over them but clearly not smooth. I guess my main question is should i risk having this guy try to fix his work? Or can i go through his insurance and have someone professional fix it?

Floors sanded on site will be far from perfect but there should not be unsanded areas and puddles of finish. First you need to have the guy come out in person and point out the problem areas and see what his response . Everyone makes mistakes, things happen and so on. If that's how all his jobs come out then thats a different story altogether. I dont think insurance covers poor workmanship, your only option is to have them fix it too you satisfaction. You cant hire someone else to repair his work without giving him the opportunity to do it first.

I agree with Kevin. If your contractor has other crews that are more capable workers, then maybe he can fix the job.He may choose to walk away and take the loss. I don't really know. But I would hold him accountable for the damage his guys did to your cabinets. And he should be insured so give him the opportunity to let his insurance pay for the damage.

As for quality, there are lots of mediocre contractors out there that get away with shoddy work . There's also a lot of homeowners that go with low bid contractors and get bit.IF you paid a fair price, you should get a great job .If you paid way under market price , then you learned a valuable lesson .

Generally speaking, my sanding and finishing is about 98 or 99 percent flawless but very few guys strive for that because most homeowners don't have that keen of an eye for detail. Also, there are usually no written standards for what you will be getting so some serious discussion needs to take place before the job begins as to what you expect and what he can deliver.

IF you come to the conclusion that your contractor isn't capable of fixing your job, all you can do is ask for a refund.Otherwise, it has to go to the lawyers
