I recently tore out the carpeting in my living room and dining room, hoping there was hardwood flooring underneath I could refinish. There was nice hardwood flooring, but it is fastened with common nails, with the heads all on top of the wood. If I sand down the wood to refinish, I will be shining up the nail heads on the floor. Is there any way I can refinish this floor?

You will need to set each and every one. If your sander hits a nail it will shred the paper and probably the drum cover as well (900.00) repair.

sounds like someone nailed them to stop movement/squeaks than put carpet over them..seen it a dozen times in my time.

Kevin pretty much summed it all up if you plan on salvaging them.

sometimes you can actually pull them out if the head is big enough..but that takes a lot of patience..

Okay, thanks for the information. Guess I'd better get to work setting nails.
