I have just put new wood flooring down in half my property and the idea is that it matches the 60 year old flooring in the rest of the property. I've had the colour whitened on the whole floor. Intiitally the contractor put down a clear lacquer which was the wrong colour and he then came back and stained it by adding white paint to the lacquer. The colour was decent but the finish was poor and splodges appeared on the old floor. He is now proposing to come back and sand and re-stain just the old floor. I have my doubts about this process of adding white paint to lacquer as I've been told its not the best approach. Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Thanks

R

White stain denotes pickling which means popping the grain of the wood with water. But you're describing tinting the finish. The best thing you could do is provide some pics of the new and old flooring. I do hope your contractor is using de waxed shellac or urethane as lacquer is a recipe for disaster.
