I picked up a piece of unfinished square nose and attempted to color match it to my Kahrs gunstock floor. I tried Minwax golden oak and early american. Neither matched, but moreover, the grain in the wood really jumped out. Reminded me of a striped Zebra. Even if the color mostly matched, the grain darkened so much that it would be totally distracting. Did I just get poor quality trim ('cuz I didn't necessarily pay a poor price)? Is it simply best to use the manufacturers trim?

It is most likely yellow pine.

Kinda looks like Red Oak, but I'm not sure. Looks like the Red Oak I went by at a big box store. I dunno. In the interest of ease I just ordered some of the Kahrs moldings.
