I just refinished my hard wood floors. I used minwax early American oil based stain, and I am happy with how the stain came out. I have applied two coats of the minwax oil based product high-build polyurethane. It says that two coats is suffient, but there is alot of cracks in my floor. I thought if I was to go over the floor one more time with a hogs hair brush and try to fill up the cracks so the floor will be relatively smooth. Anyone have any tips on a floor with alot of cracks in it, i realize that it would be impossible to fill them all up because the poly will sink in between the flooring and sub-floor. Has anyone worked with the high-build polyurethane before? It seems as if the first coat was alot smoother than the second. I did the first coat with a four inch brush and the second was put on with a lambs wool applicator. Using the brush i felt like I was able to control the finish alot better, and the applicator shed to much. I have heard of guys mixing there poly half and half with minearl spirits. This would be nice to do because of the cost of polyurethane, when I did my floor i mixed in approximately 4 ounces of minearl spirits. I was paying around $45 dollars for the finish and ended up using three gallons on the floor. It seems like alot because on the can it says it will cover approximately 450 ft. That room is right at 350 sq. ft. I really enjoyed refinishing the floors, it was a satisfying project I want to make sure my dog of 80lbs doesnt demolish the finish so if another coat of poly would help me out I would like to do so. Thanks Curtis
Here are some pics before the finish.
