Hello, I recently pulled up the old linoleum which was on my floor for thirty years. The floor is in pretty good condition, except from the nail marks and glue. How can I clean and refinish without sanding? What I was planning to do was to clean it with Murphy Oil Soap but everything I read said that this is not a good idea. Reason being oil residue for the product. Please help me. :?

Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

Sincerely,

tazmania

Denatured alcohol and lighter fluids are great for cleaning glue, but may damage the floors finish. Try a small area first. As for the muphy's soap, do not ever use it on any hardwood floor, it leaves a residue, and may cause the polyurethane to peel off depending what type it is. If they don't work, have it sanded. You can try yourself, but it is hard and time consuming. Good luck

Thanks Artisan. Sorry for not responding sooner. One more question. Now that I have the glue removed, how do I give the floor a general cleaning before applying the top coat?

Apply a topcoat of what?

Finish?

Without sanding or abrading, your going to have finish adhesion problems.

Don't even waste your time. You will NEVER be able to clean that floor well enough to properly topcoat it. SAND IT! That's the way it's done. All shortcuts lead to a dead end!
