I just had about 1600 sq. ft. of floor refinished the job came out great, but there is one area that is about 3 ft. x 3 ft,,, sort of circular in shape.that is much lighter then the rest of the floor, I thought maybe it was me just being picky, but everyone notices it... It is right in the middle of the kitchen, and very, very obvious, and like I said the rest of the job is perfect, so it is hard for me to accept the excuse that it was the sander, because the rest of the house is perfect... The owner is coming over to look at it, but my question is, Is here any way for a problem like this to be fixed, without having to do the entire floor, like I said the area is only about 3x3 but you can't ignore it.

It sounds like the area wasn't properly sanded - perhaps not fine enough in this area, so the stain didn't absorb the same as the rest of the area.

If that's the case, you'll probably need to refinish the whole area - at least the whole room (assuming there is a saddle or clean breaking point at the end of the room (or else you could add one). You can't just resand a section and you can't just apply more color to a section, esp once the poly has been put on top.

could it be the wood used in that section came from the same pallet? I wonder if its a knot or just harder wood but that took the stain differently? w/out seeing it I could only guess.

Did you alternate the flooring during install between several pallets?

I just did mine; a complete strip and finish and there is a circular darker spot, looks like I left the stain and didn't wipe it off but that's not the case. My guess is that its dog urine or something spilled from the previous owner and soaked into the floor deep.
