hey all,

Ive tried to find a thread regarding putting hardwood against a hearth and it seems like undercutting is the way to go if your hearth is thick enough. I decided to redo my hearth prior to finishing up our hardwood install (Mohawk, 1/2 inch engineered, uniclic, were floating it.) The hearth is made up of 4/4 travertine, the thickeness is about the same as my wood with underlayment under it. What do you pro's do in this situation? I read a few places were people say to caulk the edges the same color as the grout lines. I added a pic so you get an idea what im talking about. thanks all.

Mohawk requires with that product & installation,( as other manufacturers )... A minimum of 1/2" expansion around the perimeter of the room. Since you can't undercut, I would go with T-mouldings. IMO, IF it was a glue or naildown install, there's other options at that hearth.

Actually, the T-mould, properly installed; looks quite nice as a frame around the hearth in addition to giving you the proper expansion. So ya, my vote goes for the t-mould. Remember that there is always a bit of movement in these floating floors so the caulking may deteriorate over time from excessive repeated flexing.

Hey dennis, thanks for the input. I know that if i caulked it that i would have to re apply it every so often, but since the concensus seems to be t-molding, that is what i will go with...Hopefully i can get the t-molding tight enough to look good.

thanks for the help

Johnny
