Thank you to all the contributors on this forum, it is a book of knowledge available nowhere else.

I am in the middle of a living room project replacing carpet with Carlisle wide plank 3/4 red oak. Their info suggests their product will not need sanding, and they recommend using two kinds of tung oil for a total of four coats.

Has anybody here used this brand, does it turn out like they suggest, or do you need to sand anyway, and what kind of results does that finish produce?

Thanks,

Tom C

Waterlox makes it for Carlisle.

It is the same thing.
Price both.

It is, what it is. Tung oil. It isn't polyurethane.

Well, all Tung Oil isn't the same. And Waterlox is not purely Tung oil. It is that plus a mixture of phenolic resins and other additives. It has it's pluses and minuses. It is expensive and it smells, bad. It scuffs more easily than OMU. Pluses are: Easier to apply and have look good, sanding between coats not required ( but often needed ), easy to touch up, easy to spot repair. Polyurethane will be a little harder and more scuff resistant, it will cost less. If it were my house, I'd use poly. But I'm a pro. For a DIYer, Waterlox is usually easier.

Well, since I bought the tung oil with my order, I think I'll use it.

Like others have said before, this will be my one and only hardwood floor job! Unless my son gets married someday and says Dad you know how to put in a wood floor so how about it.

Otherwise, this is it. I have torn up carpet, torn up particle board, put down advantech over diagonal 1 x 12s. The wood from Carlisle is beautiful, so many long boards. I have used the Crain 812 to undercut my fireplace  (at least the dust was free). I am planning a dark and light border around the FP. Don't forget the stairs.

Now I know how hard you all work. And to think that some of you are doing it into yours 50's, I lift a single malt scotch to you!

Onward

I will have a shot of scotch with you. I'm 60 now and installed my first floor for money 49 years ago. I laid my LAST floor yesterday, Sunday; for free, lol.
