Hello, New to the forum, fairly new to hardwood flooring. From everything that I have read, the experts say to install your hardwood floor perpendicular to the floor joists. I am getting ready to install Builder's Choice Chinese Birch hardwood flooring, but our joists run the length of the rooms, the preferred direction for the install. It was suggested that I install the floor cantilever to the joists which would still enhance the look of the floor and maintain it's integrity? Has anyone had any experience with this or have any suggestions.

One more item. We plan to have the flooring throughout (i.e. living room, entry way, kitchen), however inorder to achieve this I will need to go around an "L" shaped wall. Has anyone ever run into this situation? The situation being a break in the flooring install and hoping that it meets flush at the other end?

Thanks for reading. Apologize if these topics have come up before.
Ty

Go opposite of the joist, unless the plywood or OSB subfloor is over an inch thick. If you want to go the same direction as the joists, you will most likely need an additional layer of ½" plywood.

Control lines popped and keep measuring. No gaps in the layout and it should turn out perfect.

Floorguy,
Thanks for the advice and I agree with what you recommend, the project will be underway next week. Tomorrow we meet with the cabinet guys and we will continue the great "floor before or after cabinets" debate.
