My husband and I have a house built in 1970 and we want to put down wood in our den. When we looked under the carpet, we determined that we have vinyl, that we believe is asbestos, glued to particle board. The subfloor under the particle board is strips layed on the diagonal. One installer said he could nail down using long enough nails to reach the subfloor, but we have read on this site that will not work. Since we don't want to chance taking out the particle board, our only options are either glue-down or float. Can we put down luan and glue or should we float. We don't like the hollow sound of laminate but we are afraid that the real hardwood floating system would be the same. Thanks for any advise you could give. Note added: We cannot add 3/4 on top of vinyl because we are putting wood in adjacent kitchen. We don't have quite enough room under dishwasher to go 3/4. If anyone has any suggestions, we would be thrilled.
