I am thinking about doing the man cave in the basement with the cheap utility grade oak hardwood. I would prefer a very rustic look. Is it ok to just skip the sanding and use a clear coat? What about stain? Would the unsanded floor take stain if I decided to stain it first? What would be the best products to use in this type of situation? This is a OSB subfloor.

If you can find it with beveled edges you could do it but the stain would turn out uneven and blotchy. If you can find the beveled i would rent one of those square buffer type machines hit it with 60grit then stain it. the thing gets pretty close to the edge but there will still be some hand work in the tight spaces and around door casings and such. the square buff is pretty easy to run my 9 yr old can run one.

It does not have beveled edges that I know of.

This is the stuff I was looking at.

The stain is not a must since this is a dark area I was gonna keep it light colored as possible. Something that brings out the natural colors would probably be best for me.

It's good you like rustic....take that catalogue picture and their description times about 10 towards the rustic side. Nice size holes, ( where knots were ), splintering, checking, big time overwood, miss milling, etc. etc. Also about 90% shorts.

The charachter in itself actually makes up a great looking floor, ( figure a bunch of waste)....just letting you know what your up against......

Also...Actually all they sold when I worked with it was square edge. It looks like now there's a chance your gonna get beveled and v-groove in the same batch ( "may be mixed product" )
