We have done an addition to our house and wanted to match new red oak floors to old red oak floors that were refinished with oil poly 12 years ago. The contractor talked us into using a golden pecan stain with Bona Amberseal and Bona Mega water based poly. It is FAR from matching! He says it willl amber over time, however the research I did on the products says they are non-yellowing. We want him to redo. Can we apply oil-based poly over water-based? Or do we need to completely resand the floor?

Oil-based can be applied over water base as long as the water base is cured. I do not think you will acheive the desired effect by coating over the existing finish. It is very difficult to match any old finish to any new finish without resanding both rooms. You could try refinishing the water base with an oil, but in my experience you will probably end up redoing the existing if you are looking for an exact match.

Mega will amber ive seen it time after time. matching old and new can be extreamly challenging even to the best finishers. You have to wait a week for the waterbased to cure fully then you can coat it with an oil based of your choice.

Is you term "far from matching" realistic? If so, adding a coat of OMU over your water-based finish isn't going to help much. As mickey says, only way to achieve an exact match will be re-doing both spaces. Even then there could be differences in the two floors caused by age, origin of the wood, etc. that could still make a difference in the final appearance of your two floors.
