I'm replacing wall-to-wall carpeting with 3/4" X 2 1/4" solid t&g prefinished red oak flooring. The stairs are also carpeted and the current treads under the carpet are 3/4" and the risers are 1/2". I plan on leaving the current stair treads and risers in place, cutting off the nosing and installing 3/4" prefinished red oak treads, 1/4" risers, and scotia molding under the oak tread nosing. I have a good amount of floor boards left and was wondering if it is a good idea to glue up my own treads from them. I have enough long lengths so that all tread staves would run the length of the tread. I will round over the tread nosings with a router. I will glue and screw the new treads to the subtreads. Does this sound practical and safe?

Off the top of my head, I think you'd have a hard time getting them to lay flat without careful attention when they're put together. I'm assuming you just want to apply glue and engage the tongue and groove. Doesn't hurt to try one step for practice and see what happens. Personally I'd glue and fasten each individual board to the steps. Kevin had a good link to creating a normal sized bull nose from stock recently.

Thank You for your response. I wanted to build the entire tread before installing so that I could attach returns to the treads that need them and be able to measure both the returned treads and the boxed treads with a stair jig and cut to length and angle. There are wooden skirts that the tread ends will have to be fitted to. Yes, I wanted to glue the tongues and grooves. The flooring I have is Muskoka and the milling is very good based on the fit and feel of the flooring that I have installed.

still not sure by your explanation what you think you are doing.

what is the difference between preassembly vs. assembly 1 plank at a time?

your best measure will be by 1 plank at a time..

this from a multiple stair cases rebuilt from installing flooring over the top and full rebuild tread and riser reassemblies.

Sorry for the confusion.
Preassembly would be gluing all the planks together on a workbench to create the tread and then install the tread.
The treads that I have seen for sale are made from several individual boards (staves) that are glued together. What I am questioning is whether it is a good idea to lay several of my 3/4" X 2 1/4" t&g flooring boards on a work table, put glue in the grooves and on the tongues and clamp together to create a tread. I would then route the nosing on this tread, cut it to width and length, attach a return and then install it on the stairs. The other way, which I think you are recommending is to install each flooring board individually.

I honestly don't think you will get them to hlld and stay together..the tongue and grooves aren't that tight.

I still think it should be done one plank at a time, but I guess if you can get them to hold and make one cut to size..it would be no different then installing a solid tread..

the only time you will see staves is on over size widths. standard 10.5 is usually solid piece..even 11.5" can be depending upon the mill.

Thank You.
I will take your advice and install one plank at a time.
