I posted a while back asking about filling in the space between two rooms if I combined them.

I was going to do carpet, but I decided that it's not worth it, it costs a lot also to do that, and I just might as well do hardwood.

If I install a 3/4" solid floor, is it possible to pull it back up off the floor and re-lay it in a couple years? Is it re-usable? The room layout may change, and I don't want it to go to waste...

Thank you.

I do not know but it sounds like alot of work, and you will end up with some split tongues for sure. Another question to ask is what will happen to the wood that sits around unbound tightly for a couple of years?

Can you clarify that? Adding more space?

You'll probably lose 30-40% of material(damaged) on removal IF IT'S PREFINISHED unless you find some way of removing very carefully. I'd forget about the idea completely.

Need more information

Basically at one end of the house, there are two corner bedrooms at the end of the hallway. The bedrooms are separated by a closet/wall. Eventually we would like to remove those closets/wall, join the rooms, change the door position, extend out the bathroom etc. But that's going to be a large-scale project which we're not ready for yet.

Maybe I should look at putting in a floating floor for the time being, and then when we remodel, I can move that floor to the laundry room in the basement or something?

You'll lose some of the floating floor too but not as much. Different sized rooms have different sized cuts at the ends.

Forget the wood floor and floating floor. There is absolutely no question that wall to wall carpeting is the fastest and cheapest way to cover up your floor. Then when you change the rooms, rip it up and install wood. Your cheapest floating floor your going to possibly find is $1 sq ft. And trust me its not going to last. The cheapest prefinished hardwood your going to find is probably in the $1.5-$2 range and trust me its not going to last. You can get carpet for like $.55 a sq ft if you wanted to and thats not going to last. But its the fastest and cheapest to have installed and material to purchase.

Right on. My mistake was looking at Lowes/Home Depot.

We went to a local flooring place who actually had people working that knew what they were doing. Found a nice Berber-type carpet with smaller loops to keep dog nails out, installed for less than $2.72/sqft. Might be a couple years we are on it so I didn't want to get something too shoddy, this was about the best deal we could find. I'm sure there's better deals out there, but we just need to get something down. Thank you!
