We installed 240 sq ft of Millstead Click engineered flooring. The subfloor is uneven and there are some obvious spots that need to be filled (hollow spots we missed) and the floor "clicks" in some spots when walked on (its not a squeaky floor, its definitely the new floor boards). We are going to remove and re-install after leveling the floor. We used a good quality foam underlayment. Followed the instructions correctly.

My questions:

What is the best material/product to fill low spots with? - We can't put a layer of plywood over the old floor because it would create too much of a height difference with the surrounding floors.

Is it advisable to glue the flooring together? I don't want to glue it to the floor, just thinking if I glue the planks together, it would stop the "clicking" noise.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have only done this type of floor once in 18 years. However If your going to try to level the floor and cant use plywood. you may want to try luan with a foam underlayment to avoid the clicking sound. As far as glueing the floor together its risky. May not stay together and remeber wood will expand and shrink so the glue may not hold.

id would disagree. Those type floors evolved from ones that you glued the t&g together. Some tightbond will hold that stuff together so well that when you have to remove a piece it will break in the middle of the board before it lets go at the seam. It also will take out the squeek from the joint. Keep in mind if you have a lot of deflection from an uneven floor that is the root of the problem and need to be remedied first for the glue to help the t&g squeaking.

We use Sika level 02 primer and sika level 125 1/25" to 1" thickness. Important that you have a flat floor this leveler requires virtually no help in getting itself flat. Some require screeding not this one.

Use webcrete self lever or the one posted above. Also when it comes to glueing together click floors you have to be careful. If your joints and edges of the board have wax in them you are just wasting your time. The glue won't adhere to the wax and that could create more of a problem. If there is wax I would scrape most of the wax off each board, but don't glue!!!! Sounds fun I know. If there is no wax feel free to glue. Make sure you are 100% happy with the levelness if your subfloor. you only get one chance now if you glue it.

You may want to check the moisture content of the wood. In arid or dry areas or if you allow the mc to get below 30% the wood will shrink and that could be the reason for the clicking. NWFA and most manufacturers want RH in home to be between 30% to 50% relative humidity. A $10 hygrometer will determine this. Not uncommon in El Paso, don't know what area of the country your from, to see readings of 10% to 15% during the winter months when heating cold area dries the RH really low. Most homeowners are unaware of this requirement. Neat website at http://www.weather.com/outdoors/home-im ... t/humidity
put in zipcode and inside temp gives a pretty accurate picture of indoor humidity. This is not an uncommon complaint when indoor humidity is too low back in NH furniture would fall apart when indoor humidity was at 10%.
