I just nailed the first strips of flooring and dry fitted the first 6 ft of the others and it seems fairly stable. the question I have is do I need to nail it in as it is recommended or can I get away without nailing. the flooring is 3/4'' x 3.25'' oak strip with tongue and grove

Recommended? Read the sheet.....installation instructions, not installation recommendations. Skip nailing is done by alot of guys, but even then it's only a board or 2 here or there. And even then, you are still asking for problems....squeaking, popping, gapping, overwood, on and on.....my advice would be to do it right or don't do it at all.

Dont let these guys razz ya, honeydoer. It is a fair question from a neophyte flooring installer. But they are right; nail every board at proper spacing, usually every 8-10 inches and 2-3 inches from each end. I have fired "professional" installers for skip nailing.

You can skip rows but then you can only walk in those rows.
