I am trying to get a brick wall undercut so that wood that is being installed can tuck underneath it. From a previous post I made on this forum everyone recommends undercutting the brick wall with a Crain undercut saw for a clean, professional look. The problem is every contractor I call wants to use an angle grinder or their saw does not have height or depth control. I am in the San Diego area and have called 15 different contractors, including masons, concrete experts, and flooring installers. Anyone know of someone who knows how to undercut brick in the San Diego area?

Thanks!

I hear Eric @ butlerflooringsolutions.com is supposed to be the cats meow on hardwood flooring over there. Let me know what he says so I can recommend him again if need be.

Masons and concrete guys aren't gonna have an undercut saw, any flooring installer worth his salt will.
I think your problem may lie in trying to find a flooring installer that's o.k. with undercutting, for another installer that's installing the wood

Thanks for the tip Stephen. Unfortunately his email address came back as undeliverable.

for Christ sake try to rent one. Just be sure to tell them you need a masonry blade. Or call The Tom Duffey company and hopefully they can give you a recommendation of someone in the area that's competent. They are the Crain Dealer in your area.

Believe me I have tried! Home depot and several other tool rental places! Undercutting is not super complicated and it is frustrating that the tool rental places, wood installers, and masonry experts I have called either have never heard of an undercut saw, don't have one, or want to use an angle grinder. Thanks for the info on Tom Duffey.

It is really boiling down to a contract issue. The flooring company said they would undercut in the contract. The person who is doing the actual installation (independent contractor) won't buy or rent the proper undercut equipment since he would be losing money. At this point I am basically going to force the flooring company that wrote the contract to just get the saw for my installer, find someone who has the saw, or risk breach of contract.

Thanks for all the help.

Thats just insane no one has a crain 825 or 12 or a 20. Those are the most common undercut saws and you can buy the diamond blade here for either all day long. I actually MAKE money doing that. The saw I have paid for itself on the first couple jobs.

Well,

I finally found someone who has the right equipment. A guy I called from Ocean Flooring guy immediately knew what needed to be done and said no problem. He even has the Crain saw lol. Anyway I will either use this other guy to undercut or encourage my installer to give it a go assuming he can control the cut depth.

Thanks for all your help folks.

I'm getting a bad feeling about the company that said they could undercut, then their installer balked. I'd cancel the contract with them and go with the new guy.

Someone said to use a masonary blade. I always use a diamond blade for the Crain 825. It is 10 times faster and lasts through multiple jobs.
