Wow have i messed up and need advice. Thank you in advanced. Basically i dropped a hot coal on hardwood floor burned 2 dime size holes in 1 board. I am so sick to my stomach right now. Anyways i have tried to research it a little but i need advice. I have read 2 methods. Method 1 is scrape out the burned wood as best you can with a putty knife, fill with wood filler, Sand , stain, polyurethane. Method 2 cut out board and replace. Method 3 get someone to do it.

Well i called someone about it and the guy told me i would be better off doing it myself because for what his hourly is it would end up being around 1,000. Should i call more places or does this seem about right? I have not checked to see if we have a few extra pieces of wood (but we should). Which way would be easiest?

I apologize before hand, i am in panic mode at the moment because i just recently moved back into my parents house.

Your best bet is one of these unless you want to pay someone. But I'd say paying someone that has experience using them is worth it. Unless you want your parents to kill you. LOL

Floorme,

First you need to remove the charred material until all traces of that are gone (do not leave any), use a screwdriver or something sharp to scrape out. Once removed get some "wunderfill" or "Famowood" (I believe it is sold at Woodcraft or Rockler) in a matching color and fill the depressions in thin layers with a putty knife. Do as many fills as needed and scrape of excess with the puttykife and wipe around the fill with a damp cloth.
Eventually the depressins will be filled, carefully sand smooth, you may need some acrylic artist paint and a very thin artist brush (thin down with water) to blend the woodgrain in. Next, tape of the affected board and clean the surface well and abrade with 220 grit sandpaper and apply some finish in the correct sheen over the affected/patched board, remove tape and allow to dry.
If it turn out a little duller you may rub with a small amount of automotive agressive rubbing compound (gently, check frequent).

If you are lucky it may match pretty good, if it can not get restored properly a contractor may need to attempt this or a board replacement is needed.
The kit that Stephen is suggesting is great for this but you need some specialty tools along with them and some skill to use them succesfully, search YouTube for repairing dents in wood or wood floors.

I personally find it a poor choice to have wood directly in front of a wood stove/fireplace. I recommend for this specific reason always to consider a stone, slate or tile area so sparks/embers are least likely to cause damage/fires. The floor can still be retrofitted with this. Homes have caught fire by spilled hot embers.

Good Luck,

Johannes.
