Hi all. It has been forever since I was last on here. Glad to see the forum going strong!
I have a floor to fix, was hoping for some insight from you finish guys.

I applied the final coat of oil base finish to an Oak floor the other day. The job was a new construction, so we sanded and coated twice about a month ago. When we arrived to do the final coat, there was a lot of paint on the floors, drywall mud, light scratches, etc...So, we screened with 100 grit. I applied finish, and today got a call. The client can see buffer swirls. I looked this evening, and sure enough, in the light you can see light swirl marks.
My first thought is to screen with 150 grit until the last coat is pretty much gone, cut the swirls out, maybe hit it with maroon pad as final buffing, and re-coat.
What would you guys do? Natural color by the way.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give.

That plan will probably work. I would do my last buffing with 240 grit 3m velcro discs (or a 220 screen, since it's oil), rather than rely on the maroon pad to mask the 150 swirls.

Thanks Alloy. I think I'll do just that, hitting it tomorrow sadly.

100 grit is what i finish off bare wood with .I would never screen finish with a 100 grit . As for your plan to buff with 150 and then a maroon pad , I don't think that will work .IF you start with a 150, that's ok but a maroon pad wont take out the 150 grit swirls.

I fixed it. I did in fact screen with 150, then buff with a maroon pad to remove the swirls. I was a bit paranoid, and was still seeing swirls after trying 220 grit screens, so i tried the maroon pad and it completely removed the 150 swirls, in reasonable time.
Thanks for your input guys.

The 220 swirl marks are "acceptable" swirl marks, but I can understand you wanting to get rid of any and all swirls in this case. If the customer is looking for them, then you've got to do overkill on the job.
