I've been using a Mastercraft 16" floor machine with a UFO attachment for ten years now. I was using it today to clean up some new white pine I had just installed. Something gave way in the UFO and it locked up, which made the buffer shear the planetary gear unit right off the bottom. I've gone online to try and find parts, but haven't had any success.
Just wondering if this thing is fixable or is it toast?

Master craft is a big company. They should be able to take care of you. But thanks for the heads up on the UFO. I've thought about that unit for a while now and will likely avoid it.

I finally had time to get into the unit. There are six cap screws that sheared off. I think I can get them out and put in new ones and be back in business.
The UFO, however; I'll need to see if it's worth fixing.

You are correct. There were 6, 10-32 cap screws that held the planet drive on the bottom of the housing. I got three of them out. The other three I ruined along with the surrounding metal in the planet drive. Luckily, I just bought a drill press, so I was able to increase the hole size and tap it for a 1/4 fine-thread bolt. I haven't used it yet, but I think it will work fine.

The UFO is also fixable. Just need to order a small cog. I'm glad because I use it as my final sand on raw wood with 120 screens. It really puts a smoothness to it.
