I have about 1000sf of oil sealed Brazilian Cherry flooring that is about 1 year old now and has seasoned nicely. Now that it has darkened, we have about 15 boards that have pretty severe silica spots that are quite visually distracting and might even be considered a problem for re-sale of the home. Our builder and floor installer have been very cooperative and we have discussed everything from leaving "as is", to tearing the whole floor out. The flooring installer claims to have installed 30-40000 sf of B. Cherry and has never seen more than a few boards with silica spots and is very apologetic about the whole deal. Has anyone had good success removing "select boards" in an existing floor and been happy with the match? It doesn't bother me that it might take a year for the new boards to season, but I don't want to look at area across the floor where the gaps are diferent and the finishes don't match. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a tough one, I cannot imagine ripping out an entire floor because of a few silica laden boards. I also thinik any BC manufacturer/mill will tell you to take a hike if you go back to them claiming faulty material. IMO your installer is not faulty as these silica pockets are often very difficult to see and it is after all a natural trait of BC. New material will be so photosensitive that it should only take a couple mos. to blend back in. I would try to replace one of the less obvious boards and if the installer is successful let him go at it, perhapse splitting the cost with him?
