I looked at a condo in Ct to purchase last night with brazilian cherry flooring in the living room/dining room area. When I lifted up the area rugs I noticed that the floor underneath was a dramatically different color. Is it possilbe to expose those areas to light and have them age to the proper color of the rest of the floor? I've see conflicting information on the interent. Some say the underexposed area's will catch up and blend with the rest of the floor and others say the entire floor will have to be resanded. If I do purchase the condo I'd also like to extend the flooring to other rooms. Would it be easy enough to match up the type of flooring? Any help would be appreciated.

K

Hi
If you expose the flooring , it will attempt to catch to the rest of the floor but it will take some time . It is the same wood and the same sun light so if you are patient and expose the covered floor , in time it will begin to change. Give it 6 months and the difference should be noticeable

As far as sourcing new wood, you should be able to get Brazilian cherry that matches what you have .We tend to use this wood in Connecticut fairly regularly. I've been in the wood flooring trade for 17 years in Connecticut. If you would like flooring sources in Connecticut, send me a message.

I've always wondered about this and I have a question for James. It will change/catchup in color but there will always be a noticeable difference regardless of the time? As far as re sanding you can't take the color difference out. Correct?

Ken, Not sure if you meant your question for me or Paull...I wasn't in on this thread..

but since asked..=)..

yes, the color change will be removed it sanded and the floors will return to their original orangy light cherry color....if left to lighting exposure..the color change is only so much, so the unexposed areas will eventually age to the exposed color in time..

however, i would suspect their may still be some outlining of carpet furniture etc..

I've never done any real study on this and seen results down the road....sounds like a job for superman

I've called 2 flooring places here in CT and they both said the unexposed area's would eventually darken but it could take up to 6 months and the likely hood that they would blend seamlessly with the rest of the floor is highly unlikely. About the only solution would be to re-sand the entire floor area refinish it again. Does this floor EVER reach a stable color where you can place furniture, rugs, etc. on it? If not then why the heck would anyone want it? Granted its a pretty color but sheesh talk a bout a pain in the neck.

the color does not continue to change or get darker...once it has changed..its done..

I agree that it would not likely be seamless, however i have no data to back that up....and I suspect the only ones that do are the actual end users

I'd try a UV light to speed it up, like as in sunlamp.
