I have a bostitch model MIII. The end of the shoe is damaged. Is that meant to be hit with the metal side of the mallet? If not what is the correct use of metal side of the mallet and the end of the shoe. And do I post pictures. Thanks.

The metal end is to bang in stubborn boards usually the long way. the only thing you should be hitting on the gun is the plunger.

The metal side of the mallet is supposed to be used for taping the tongue on the side of the floor board during installation.

End of shoe?
I think you are referring to the protrusion at the front? This is for resting the gun in the forward position on a flat surface.
