Need a little advic e on how to install a border. Imagine a roughly square room, which will have a border around the outside, and a "plus" sign in the middle, dividing the field into four equal areas. The four areas will be laid diagonal.

Where do you start? With the "plus" sign and work out? Or with the outer border and work in?

Start with the cross. I strongly recommend gluing those pieces and allowing them to set before you install the quadrants.

There are a few tricks to it. What kind of tools are at your disposal?

I was going to use 30# paper between the subfloor and the finished floor ... how would I glue the boards?

Tools available ... whatever is needed. Seriously. Tell me what you have in mind.

I would install the cross, install the diagonal field boards and let them run a little long, then cut them all to length with a saw and straightedge. Then rout a new groove in the ends and use slip tongues for the outer border.

You have it the way I would do it.

Glue the boards directly to the subfloor. Then start your felt.

Why 30#?

This is an antique heart pine floor we refinished this summer. The photo was taken while the first coat of finish was still wet. They say it was installed in 1922. When you move around the room the sections change color, nice.

Floorguy ... am I reading correctly? You're saying to glue the cross divider boards in place, then lay felt in the field areas?

And why not 30# felt? Not arguing, just asking.
