Simple as it seems I can't seem to find a quick answer. Unstained floors...

Is the Bonaseal considered a coat of poly in terms of durability?

I'm using the Bonaseal to give it a slight "oil" finish to darken them a tad and then is 2 or 3 coats of poly recommended on top of that?

To save money can I do 1 coat Bonaseal, 1 coat Mega and 1 or 2 coats Traffic? Has anyone done this combination before?

Thanks in advance - Philip

Yes, I do a coat of sealer on a natural, un-stained floor. I'll use either Bonaseal (the water based sealer) or Bona's Dry Fast oil sealer. then follow that up with 2 or 3 top coats, preferably Traffic. Bona insists that one should not use different finishes under Traffic, like your suggestion of Mega with Traffic as a final coat. They are not very specific as to why. I believe it has something to do with the way the different finishes are cross linked. I would guess that this would not be an issue if one were to allow the previous coats to fully cure for a week prior to top coating with Traffic. As for counting the sealer as a coat, well, yes, it is a coat of finish in a sense. It performs a different function than the top coat but it is a coat. I just use Bona's guidelines. one sealer and 2 top coats for standard residential and an additional coat for commercial or heavy traffic areas. IMO, two coats of Traffic over oak still looks a little "thirsty". So on oak, I'll typically specify 3 coats of Traffic.

on oil based floors I do
stain or sealer + 2 coats OMU
waterbased
stain or sealer + 2-3 coats of traffic

So I guess I count the sealer as a coat
But I wouldnt do
stain + sealer + 1 coat of traffic
I like to have at least 2 coats of actual finish.
