Our installer prepared our quote with either 2 coats of Mega, or for $250 more 2 coats of Traffic. (It's about 500 sq ft).

The wood is in the kitchen, bathroom and also high-traffic areas like the front door and hallway areas, so the best finish is important to us (we know nothing is waterproof but obviously kitchens and powder rooms will get a little bit of water from time to time on them).

What do YOU recommend we choose? We are thinking and requesting additional coats, upgrading to Traffic, etc. What is the right decision? 2 coats of sealer? 3 coats of Mega? 2 coats of Traffic? 3 coats of traffic? HELP! We're going with SATIN, we don't care for a high-gloss finish.

THANK YOU! We're unsure of what to do here.

I give all of my customers 3 coats of Traffic Satin. This is no doubt the best that you could do. It is why I decided not to offer the lower grade finishes with the up-sell option for the better finish. Maybe I am not the best salesman. I can live with that but I know that I have done the best job possible for my customers and their floors.

Remember you only want to sand and finish your floors once. After that you should be looking at a maintenance coat from time to time.

I put 2 coats of traffic on my mother-in-laws floor for a test. It is adequate. I want my customers to have a job that is more than adequate.

Go for the 3 coats of traffic and know you have the best their is.

Thanks - appreciate the advice and that's probably what we were thinking.

Any other opinions out there?

I also offer Traffic (3 coats) as an upgrade to 3 coats of oil-modified polyurethane. Since I sometimes am bidding against a competitor flooring contractor for a general contractor, I'll bid the project with the basic choices. That means no extras like borders, wood registers, feature strips, dark stain and high end/high cost finishes. This enables the builder to compare apples to apples. After we/I get the contract, I sometimes will be allowed to discuss options with the customer about upgrading certain features of the floors. Like registers and color and finishes and even borders and such. At that time, I'll mention Traffic as an upgrade. The cost of Traffic over a good OMU is about 5 to 1, or $20.00 a gallon compared to $100.00 a gallon. Those costs add up FAST and I cannot afford to "eat" the cost of the finish, especially in a competitive bidding scenario. I will say this. Every time I've used Traffic, I've gotten nothing but great remarks and comments from the customers.
