We have installed 1700 sq feet of 3/4 inch handscrapped oak hardwood flooring in our new construction home. During installation the carpenter would pull out "bad Boards" which were splintering down the center. With that being said he didn't catch all of them and some of them were installed.( it is a handscrapped floor so it looks a little rough anyway) After carefully inspecting the floor I found several boards where the finish is splintered down the center of the board. because of this i went throught the boxes that were not yet installed and pulled out approximately 3 boards per box. Of course I have been in contact with the company we purchased it from and they have been in contact with the manufacture. The manufacture sent a rep out about 4 weeks ago and first said it was installed to tight then said it was installed too loose and that it was a catch 22 and then said that our drywall mud must have been wet (house was drywalled and painted in Jan) he said he would get back to us the next day and have heard nothing from him since. Our carpenter has cut out the bad peices and begun replacing them. He has been installing wood floors for over 30 years and there is no question in my mind they are installed correctly. We have given the bad peices that were pulled out of the box to the company we purchased the floor from to show them they were bad prior to installation. Now that company won't return my calls. I'm at the end of my rope and don't know what to do. What do you suggest.

I suggest harrassing the manufacturer until they give. But.....sad to say the installer is the last guy on the quality control line. We are held responsible for installing and or culling out the bad boards. However you just cannot see all the splits sometimes until after the install.

You could also arm yourself with an inspection by a qualified hardwood inspector in your area. The inspectors the man sends out can be anything from a carpet cleaner to a handyman. Get soemone who's actually installed hardwood flooring. I can point you in the right direction or you can go to the NWFA website to find one.

I would agree it sound like they are already trying to pin the blame on you installer. Sounds like he knows what he is doing.

I agree. Continue to bug the company. This is not normal.
