Have the overhang on my stairs that I need to remove. I have a circular saw, jigsaw, and reciprocating saw/sawzall. None look like they will go all the way across. What's the best method? I realize that it will all be covered after so if I get knicks it's not a huge deal...

Haha. Oh.

I guess sometimes it's the simple things that get it done.

Jig saw.

Make a cut in the center (cutting the overhang in half) then cut along the risers, you can lift/tilt the jig saw towards the ends to get pretty close. then just bend it out away from the riser. works almost everytime. I rarley have to chilsel/ sawzawll/ fien the ends. Just remmeber to cut the remaining peices to fit in the notches on the side skirts

That's a good idea too thank you.

What exactly do you mean by cutting the remaining pieces for the notices? I noticed this when I was looking at them, that there will be gaps in my riser where I cut the nose out. I didn't know if I was supposed to fill that with wood putty and paint over it; or what is supposed to happen?

I'm going with finished maple stair nosings, and then using the flooring as the rest of the step; probably be 2 or 3 boards + the nosing...

I was talking about the void that will be in the side skirrts of the stairs. Most existing stair treads go into the side skirts, so when you cut them off there is a peice on each side that you would need to fill. I use small pieces from the portion of the tread I just cut off

I'm sorry you're right, I didn't mean riser, I meant stringer...I'm retarded.

Yes that's the void that I'm talking about.
