this is related to prior post 'acceptable variance in board width'...

the flooring store delivered new load of narrower (4" instead of 5") flooring. i took out a few sample pieces to see if the width is consistent, and the pieces are again off by 1/16" or so.

flooring store says this is natural width variation...is it? i've attached a few photos of a mock-up of 3 rows....

from 3 ft away:

from 2 ft away:

from 1 ft away:

is this normal? can gaps be fixed during sanding/finishing?

i can wedge the middle row so it's tight against one of the outer rows...but that'll just open up the gap on the other edge.

thanks for any help

I think its more to do with the species than anything you dont see solid birch flooring much and id be willing to bet its more because of the instability than anything. I wouldnt get to bent on a 16th. unless you really really watch the r/h in and below your home that floor is going to move year round and you will have cracks that size and larger thru out.
