The new solid qtr & rift sawn White Oak flooring is in and it looks great. But I looked around for the greatest gap width between wall and flooring. That dimension is 5/8" along a dining room wall with a window above. My installer recommends MDF baseboard with no base shoe. Fine! When I asked for his recommended width he says, "3/4 inch." Hey people, I'm just not finding much baseboard in 3/4' width. Any of you know of places that readily have access to 3/4" wide MDF????? I love it when they put you in a round room and tell you to pee in the corner!

I do not know where to find that thickness.

A question though: Why no shoe moulding/trim? Unless your floor is 'perfectly' flat, the base trim will not bend, easily, over any variances. This will show gaps with just the base trim/moulding.

The shoe not only adds elegance, it also covers up what cannot be easily countoured by the base trim.

Typical baseboard thickness (not width) is 9/16". So to cover the 1/16" gap after the thickness of the baseboard is factored in, merely fur out the bottom of the baseboards that 1/16" with cardboard or thin wood. This will not be very noticeable. But the comment about baseshoe is correct. If your new baseboards are taller (wide), then it is more difficult to get them to conform to any irregular surfaces and gaps between the finished floors and the bottoms of the baseboards may occur. But if you do not want baseshoe, then do what I've had to do before, which is scribe the base to the floors and fur out areas that need it.
