I will be installing 3/4 x 2.5 " pre-finished wood floor in a few months. I will be installing this over existing vinyl tiles. My question is where my kitchen floor meets up with the carpeted areas of the house, family room, living room, etc, how would i transition my baseboard? For example if the baseboard today is of even height at say 3.5" if i pull up the baseboard in the kitchen and lay the wood, then the baseboard on top there will be a 3/4" height gap between the top of the baseboard in the living room and kitchen. I should say that i am reluctant to just intall the floor up against the baseboard because the height of the baseboard with the 3/4" flooring butted against it, would look strange, as it would leave a very small reveal once quarter round was installed?

any thoughts?

Pull the carpet back around the corners and raise the base untill you hit another door or angle it down to the other corner.

Well...only so many options. You can remove the base and rip down the height where your installing the wood. Or leave the base and install quarter round. I guess you can also undercut the base. I'm not a big fan of the last two options.

I run into this problem all the time out here. When people have 2 1/2"-3 1/2" baseboard. A lot of time I end up replacing base in the entire house with 6" or so...

How do you normally transition between baseboards when one is natural wood and one is white?

Mm,

Take the vinyl out along with the underlayment. Then you will be level.

I didn't see any mention of underlayment....While the existing vinyl is only a nominal 1/8"...The base would be raised by 3/4", being re-installed on top of the hardwood,( and 3/4" higher than adjoining base). Unless using a shoe moulding, (compromising the height profile of the base).

I don't believe such a simple question is still going on. As Howard said just rip it down so it sits on top of the hardwood and the tops line up.
