Hello...

Was wondering if the baseboard and quarter-round need to match the floor. I have all oak base/trim/doors and was considering installing a darker floor like a santos mahogany. Will it look funny if the floor is dark and the trim is light? Should the quarter-round be matched to teh floor and teh base trim left alone? Having trouble finding pictures with oak trim to compare...everyone seems to have white painted trim...

Thanks.....

IMO, if the existing doors, jambs, casings and other trim are oak, and you are not going to change all that, then I'd stay with oak baseboards. I feel that trim should have continuity. You can use different baseboards but that is a matter of taste.

Our doors, casings, and trim are all painted white (Eggshell, technically). When we install the harwood - a dark distressed maple - we're going to use the same color on the replacement baseboards and 1/4-round. I agree with Gary that the trim should have continuity, even if it is in stark contrast with the floor.

Gary,

Are you familiar with the "embossed wood base board"? It's not MDF, it is made of real wood and then embossed to look like oak. Our baseboards and door jambs are all made of that material. If you are familiar, do you know if it can be painted? The reason why I ask is that I probably will buy new baseboards (White) and then paint the door jambs white if possible.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread.

KRV

I actually have that pressed wood trim in the house now and am pulling it all off to put oak...The oak hasn't been installed yet and I still have the opportunity to use a cherry which would be closer to the santos mahogany, but at a greater expense than the oak. I suppose if I am going to put out the $$ for the floor I should get a trim that would compliment the floor better. Oak trim with a dark floor just doesn't seem right....Although the kitchen cabinets are oak......

I considered painting the pressed wood but thought that it would look bad because you will still be able to see that fake graining rather than a smooth finish.

Anyone know of any good websites or magazines that would have wood floor pictures?

Thanks.

Are you replacing your door jambs? Do you think the door jambs could be sanded since it is real wood underneath? I would hate to have to replace the door jambs.

I am actually putting in new complete pre-hung doors with jambs. Probably need to sand and prime if it is going to be painted. Paint would probably peel off if you didn't.
