My wife and I are planning on installing 4” Kahrs Santos Mahogany engineered wood over 800 sq ft of our first floor. We live in Austin and wanted to know if we needed to get some time of humidity control unit (humidifier/dehumidifier) for the house before gluing down the wood? Does anyone in Texas experienced any issues with buckling and/or floor board separation here in Austin?

I already did. Thanks for suggesting him. See below:

"Austin actually isn't bad, if your home is occupied all the time. If you take vacations and turn the HVAC system up so it doesn't run as efficiently, to save energy cost while your gone, a dehumidifier would be an excellent idea.

Yes, I have investigated buckling and I have inspected gapping wood floors, here in Austin. Acclimation, acclimation, acclimation!!! Lack of proper acclimation has been the cause, the majority of the time. Except for the unfortunate water leak, that will cause a buckled floor. Make sure the wood is acclimated to 9-10% moisture content, verified by a pin-type wood moisture meter.

Thanks!

Perry Wright"

Understandable. Ive like many others on here have been giving out free info to people that has taken a lifetime of experence to build. Its somewhat annoyinhg when you have someone second guess and pegionhole recomendations. I read that you are an engineer by day so that pretty much sums up you arsenal of questions. Often times we get the same type of questions when its a homeowener who has hired a contractor to do the job and it goes south looking for a way to pin the blame on them. Best of luck to you and your install I think you have asked all the right questions, if you are really that aprehensive about it hire a pro with refrences and referrals and of course insurance.

Kevin,

I appreciate all the help. The reason why I posted AustinFloorGuy's response was for others in my situation to see it on the discussion board. I meant no disrespect to you guys.

Hi gray ,

Going for humidifier/dehumidifier is a good idea that came into you mind. It will also help you at the time of dryness/excess moisture at your home . :) I would suggest you to install one.But before installing make sure to go with good brands only . Good Luck !!!

I finished the glue down in early Fall. The planks were inside the AC controlled house. No issues thus far. I think as long as you keep your AC working at your set temp, you should be ok. I'll let you know how summer goes.
